Cat food vs Age
What should we feed our cat? Although it seems like a easy question, well, it’s not. It gets tougher for those who only knows about stray cats and never had the chance to encounter an indoor one. Stray cat seems to eat all kind of food, rice, fish, meat, bones, milk and so forth, anything you through at them, they take it in their mouth and pass it to their tummy in no time. Well, things are not same for indoor cats. Most of the new born stray kittens end up being dead at an early age. Some in diarrhoea, some in flue, some dies starving, some gets hit by a car, some killed buy dogs or other big cats. If you have a closer look at your neighborhood, you will understand that the total number of cats rarely increases, unlike dogs. Those who survive all these challenges and hardship and manage to live, grow up to become a strong, healthy and capable cat. They can eat and digest anything that goes to their tummy. But the situation is quite different for indoor rescued cats, specially those which are expensive breeds, e.g. Persian, Siamese, Calico etc. These cats are very prone to diarrhoea, food-poisoning, stomach upset and other food related diseases. So if you are a new cat owner, keep reading.
01. Age less than one month:
At this age, the only food that a kitty can digest is cat milk, nothing else. Now if you end up having a orphaned kitten in your house, the best way to feed it is to find out a lactating cat mother. If you are not that lucky to find a mom cat, you have to feed it something else. Remember one thing, NO COW MILK. Cat cannot digest cow milk at all. Buy Lactogen 1 from any local pharmacy or departmental store. This is a milk replacer, specially made for infant human baby, but works great for young kittens. Mix it with water and make a dilute liquid. Follow the instruction on the can. Although the instructions are made for human babies, it still will go great for kittens. Please here for more details.
02. Age between 1-3 months.
At this age, you may shift from milk to other food. But don’t get carried away. The shifting process has to be very slow. Slowly decrease the amount and frequency of milk and increase other food. Chicken is the best choice. Small cat cannot eat hard meat, so it better to blend it using blender and mix it up with some water. Fish can be fed the same way. If you are always at a rush, blend a huge amount of chicken or fish and store it in the refrigerator. Before feeding, mix three or four spoons of hot water to warm up the food. Please do not give any type of bones, neither fish bone nor meat bone. Rice is also discouraged. If the cat is unable to eat from a bowl, give it on a clean flat surface. You can increase the taste by smashing soft boiled chicken liver with it. At the end of 3 months, stop giving milk. Salt, spices and onions are strictly prohibited.

03. More than three months:
At this age, cat can eat anything, fish, meat, rice, liver, dry food etc. If your cat is not used to bones, avoid it.
04. Pregnant and Lactating mother:
The food is the same like other cat, but the amount will be double. You can also feed kitten food from pet stores.
05. Senior Cats, age more than seven years:
At this age, cat’s teeth start to decay and fall off. Therefore, they becomes unable to eat hard food. Feed them the same food as 2 month old kitten. Feed it with hand if it cannot eat by itself.
What not to feed the cats:
01. Cow milk: No matter how old are they, cow milk is strictly prohibited. The digestive system never supports cow milk.
02.Salt: Salt causes hair loss for cars. Avoid salts.
03.Spices and onions: Spices can be digested by stray cat, but indoor cats cannot. These are really poisonous.
04.Human Medicine: Never even think about giving human medicine. These may cause death.
05.Cold freezing food: Do not feed cold food directly took out from refrigerator. Warm it up before feeding. You may mix adequate hot water to do the job. Be careful, the food can neither be freezing nor very hot. Cats are very prone to flue.
Also keep in mind...........
01. That your cat drinks enough water.
02. Persian and expensive breeds must be fed according to vet’s prescription.
03.Don’t bring any sudden change to the diet. Specially if you feed the cat dry food and require a diet change, change by mixing it up with old food.
04. Feed your cat green grass once a week. Grass juices are very helpful for their digestive system. Do not force feed, just put in front of them. They will do the rest.
